Ancient Theatre of Dodoni, Ioannina

Description

The Ancient Theatre of Dodoni is one of Greece’s largest ancient theatres with a capacity of 15,000 to 17,000 audience members. It was constructed at the beginning of the 3rd century BC, during the reign of King Pyrros (292-272 BC) and it was associated with the Naia festival, a celebration in honour of Zeus Naios. The monument was initially excavated by archaeologist K. Karapanos between 1875 and 1878. At a subsequent stage, the site was researched by archaeology professor D.Evangelidis along with S. Dakaris (1929-1932), who continued the excavation process after World War II, also contributing to its restoration.
