Ancient Theatre of Maronia, Rodopi

Description

The Ancient Theatre of Maronia, built on the slopes of Mount Ismaros near the sanctuary of Dionysus, is one of the most important monuments in Thrace. It was constructed during the early Hellenistic period (late 4th century BC to early 3rd century BC) and forms part of the organized urban web of the ancient city.  The theatre underwent three construction phases: initially, it was a venue for theatrical performances; during the Roman period, a stage and proscenium were added; and in the late Roman era, the orchestra was converted into an arena. It could accommodate approximately 1,200 to 1,300 audience members and featured an excellent sewage system. The theatre was brought to light during consistent excavations conducted in ancient Maronia from 1981 to 1988 by archaeologist Evangelos Pentazos. Today, it stands as a significant cultural attraction, drawing visitors from Greece and around the world.
