Ancient Theatre of Samos (Wooden Theatre)
Description
The theatre is built on the hillside of the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani (Virgin Mary in the Cave), in Pythagoreion, Samos. Only a few findings from it have come to light. It was constructed in Roman times and it seems that it consisted of an auditorium (koilon), an orchestra, and a stage. Only a few of the stone parts of the theatre are extant. The morphology of the tier-shaped ground allows for a specific area of the site to be used as an auditorium. The findings from the 1966 excavation are restricted to a set of rectangular stone plates located in front of the stage. A new wooden structure with seating and an orchestra pit has been installed on the site today. It has a capacity to accommodate around 750 audience members.
