Archaeological site of Holy Poseidon and Amphitrite, Tinos
Description
In an area with abundant water, next to the sea, in Kionia of Tinos and at a distance of 3 km, west of Chora, is the Sanctuary of Poseidon and Amphitrite, the ruling Gods of the sea, according to Greek mythology.
The excavation by the French Archaeological School was important for the reason that, of all the Cyclades, only in Tinos we have a Sanctuary dedicated to the worship of Poseidon and his wife Amphitrite. The Sanctuary was founded at the end of the 4th century. B.C. and is abandoned in the middle of the 3rd century. A.D.
Epigraphical and historical evidence informs us that Poseidon was worshiped as a healing Physician, as was also Amphitrite, who healed barren women. In honor of God, holidays were held, the “Poseidia” or “Posidonia”, which included tragic battles with theatrical performances in the ancient theater of Tinos, in the area of today’s Holy Church of Evangelistria.
