Ancient Theatre of Aptera, Chania

Description

The ancient theatre of Aptera is a distinct section of the archaeological site of Ancient Aptera, situated on a hill in the Megala Chorafia area, overlooking the Lefka Ori mountain range. There are three primary construction stages for the theatre: the Hellenistic, the First Roman, and the Second Roman. The ancient theatre, fully uncovered by archaeologists after extensive work from 2012 to 2015, is the only restored ancient theatre in Crete. Since 2015, when it was delivered to the public, it has become an integral part of the city, as it is open to visit and hosts events and music theatre performances. Today, the ancient theatre has a capacity of around 350 audience members.
