Archaeological Museum of Rhodes
Description
The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is housed in the medieval building of the Hospital of the Knights. Its construction started in 1440 by the Grand Master of the Knights de Lastic, but was completed 49 years later by the Grand Master d’ Aubusson. It is a structure of Gothic rhythm with Renaissance elements. The entrance of the Museum is a pointed door with Post-Gothic groin vaults. The building includes an interior courtyard surrounded by a two-story arcade, where the halls and storage rooms of the Museum lead to. The Archaeological Museum’s permanent collection comprises findings from excavations mainly conducted by Italian rulers on Rhodes and the rest of the Dodecanese. Mycenaean jewelry, vessels, and small items from burial ensembles in Ialyssos and Kamiros dating from the Geometrical to the Classical period (9th to 4th century BC), sculptures from the Classical and Hellenistic periods, and Rhodes coins from the Hellenistic era are the Museum’s most prominent exhibits.
