Athanasakio Archaeological Museum of Volos
Description
The Athanasakio Archaeological Museum of Volos is one of Greece’s oldest museums. It was founded in 1909 thanks to a donation from expatriate Alexios Athanasakis of Portaria, Pelion. Housed in a neoclassical building on the beach of Anavros, it was established to host the inscribed tombstones of ancient Demetrias, which were discovered by archaeologist Ap. Arvanitopoulos. The museum features artifacts from Thessaly, spanning from the Neolithic Age to the Roman period. In 2004, it underwent renovation and expansion, offering modern exhibition infrastructure. Today, it stands as a significant cultural center, showcasing Thessaly’s rich history and culture.
