Byzantine Museum of Argolis, Argos

Description

The Byzantine Museum of Argolis is housed in the western wing of Kapodistrias Barracks in Argos. The complex of the Barracks, a historic listed building, is situated at the heart of the city, in close proximity to the neoclassical structure of the Municipal Market and the Archaeological Museum of Argos. The original structure dates back to the second Venetian period of the city and underwent extensive damage during the Greek War of Independence. Between 1828-1829, by order of Ioannis Kapodistrias and with the help of architect Lambros Zavos, the complex was constructed to house the cavalry of the newly-formed Greek state. In 1992, the approval was granted for the establishment of a Museum of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art in the entire western wing of the Barracks, and in 2005, the works began to transform the western wing into a museum.
