Fortress of Palamidi, Naflpion

Description

The fortress of Palamidi, with its eight bastions surrounded by walls, is one of the most significant fortification structures in Greece. It is a Venetian fortification work dating back to the early 18th century. A tall, ascending pathway with small embrasures running along its length leads to the northwestern part of the Fortress.  Equally significant is the temple of Saint Andreas, inside a bastion of the same name. It is covered by a semi-cylindrical dome and its eastern half extends into one of the arches supporting the corridor along the walls. Its free part has two aisles. Another famous bastion of the fortress of Palamidi, known as “Miltiadis”, was used as a prison cell for Theodoros Kolokotronis, the famous hero of the Greek War of Independence.
