Gymnasium, Ancient Olympia
Description
During Hellenistic times, the Gymnasium, an elongated monumental building complex, was built in the flat area northwest of Iera Alteos and east of the Kladeos river bed. The Gymnasium is located to the north of the earlier Palestra, with which they are the main facilities for the preparation of athletes in Olympia. The athletes of the road and pentathlon events trained here. The building is developed on the North-South axis and consists of four arcades that surround the central courtyard area. The individual parts of the building are being built gradually, while their exact dating is currently not ascertained. The building, with a length of 220 m and a width of 120 m., has dimensions similar to the Stadium and covers an area exceeding 26 acres.
