Odeon of Gortys, Crete

Description

The Odeon is situated on the northern edge of the ancient agora of Gortys, next to the River Litheos. It was used for musical and theatrical performances. The semi-circular building consists of three parts: a cavea with stone seats, an orchestra, and a raised rectangular stage. This structure underwent many alterations from Classical times to the 1st century AD, when it acquired its present-day form. Smaller modifications were also made to it between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. From the 6th century onwards, it ceased being used as an Odeon, and the backstage area became a burial ground.
