Ottoman Osman Shah Mosque (Kursum Mosque), Trikala

Description

The Osman Shah or Kursum Mosque (Lead Mosque) is an Islamic mosque built in the 16th century. It was designed by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, and it is situated on the edge of the city of Trikala. It is one of the 79 mosques built by him in the Greek territory and the only one surviving. Its name comes from the Turkish world “kursum” (in Turkish writing: kurşun), which means lead, as its dome is covered with lead. In the present day, the interior space of its “türbe” (mausoleum) houses archaeological findings from the surrounding area, while also serving as a venue for low-key events.
