Roman Agora, Delphi

Description

The first monument visitors encounter upon entering the sacred courtyard of the temple of Apollo in Delphi is a large rectangular paved square that was once surrounded by Ionian arcades on three sides, forming a kind of corridor on the southern side. The square was built during the Roman period, but its visible remains, on the northern and north-western sides, are from the Early Christianity period. In the outdoor area, there would have been an agora, where visitors to the sanctuary could buy offerings for the god, as well as other items needed for worship practices.
