Roman Odeon of Nikopolis, Preveza

Description

The Roman Odeon, one of the most significant and well-preserved monuments in Nikopolis, is a true architectural work of art, created by an unknown, yet renowned architect. It is situated in the city centre, on the western side of the early Christian wall, bordering with the Roman agora (forum). During the celebration of Nea Aktia, speeches, literary and musical games, as well as theatre performances were taking place there in honor of the god Apollo. The rest of the time, it probably also served as a “bouleuterion” (assembly house), as it was next to the agora. It was constructed during the reign of Emperor Augustus (early 1st century AD) and underwent various repairs and conversions between the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 3rd century AD. Today the monument has been completely excavated and extensive repair work has been done on its seats, auditorium, proscenium, and stage.
