Holy Monastery of Our Lady of Akrotiri and Saint John the Theologian in Toplos, Sitia

The Holy Monastery of Our Lady of Akrotiri and Saint John the Theologian in Toplos is situated in eastern Crete, near Sitia, and was most likely founded in the 14^th century. The name “Toplos” originates from the Turkish word “top” (canon), as the Monastery was fortified. It served as a spiritual and national centre, especially during the Venetian and Turkish occupations, offering refuge and support to revolutionaries. The Monastery features remarkable frescoes, icons, and manuscripts, acting as a religious and cultural hub. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Theologian.
