Zinzirli Mosque, Serres

Description

The Zinzirli Mosque is located in the southwestern part of the city of Serres, in one of its most densely populated areas. It is a medium-sized mosque with a central four-walled space, where the eastern, northern, and western sides are enclosed by a two-story arcade supported by columns. In the southern side stands out the rectangular space of mihrab. The main space is covered by a dome, while the ground floor and the floor on top of the arcades are covered by trough-like domes. In the south-western corner there is a surviving minbar, made of marble, and regarded as one of the best extant examples of its type in Greece. From an archaeological and morphological perspective, the Zinzirli Mosque falls into a category of surviving buildings constructed in the late 16th century in Constantinople. These buildings follow the style of the Sinan school, which is named after the renowned architect of the classical period of Ottoman architecture.
