Ancient Edessa – Archaeological Site of Longos
Description
Ancient Edessa and the archaeological site of Longos are major landmarks in the history of Edessa and the broader region of Macedonia. The ancient city was one of the most important in the Macedonian Kingdom, thanks to its strategic location and abundant water resources. The Longos site, located near the modern city, has yielded important archaeological finds that shed light on the everyday life, organization, and worship practices of its inhabitants from the Hellenistic to the Roman periods.
Excavations have uncovered parts of residences, streets, and buildings, along with ceramic artifacts and coins, all of which indicate the region’s continuous habitation and economic development. Particularly significant are the findings related to commercial activity, as Edessa served as a communications hub between the inland areas and the flatlands. The archaeological site of Longos substantially contributes to our understanding of the ancient city’s historical evolution and highlights Edessa’s enduring significance as a cultural, administrative, and economic hub in Northern Greece.
