Shipyards (neoria) of the archaeological site of Oeniadae, Aetolia-Acarnania

Description

The shipyards (neoria) of the ancient city of Oeniadae, located in the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania, are a unique monument of antiquity and a testament to the city’s crucial naval activity. Constructed in the early 4th century BC, these shipyards are situated near the port of the ancient city and served as a naval station, as well as a site for constructing, maintaining, and housing warships. The complex includes six boathouses – roofed ramps deigned for lifting vessels – carved into the natural rock, with impressive walls that extend up to 11 meters in height. This monument is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Greece, highlighting the role of Oeniadae as a strategic and commercial center. The shipyards remained in use until Roman times, when they were abandoned. Today, they offer visitors a unique experience, connecting the natural landscape with ancient technology and history.
