Archaeological Museum of Aigion
Description
The Archaeological Museum of Aigion opened in 1994 and showcases antiquities from Aigialeia. It is housed in the city’s Old Municipal Market building, which is believed to have been designed by German architect Ernst Ziller around 1890. The Museum’s operations were interrupted in 1995 by a powerful earthquake that damaged the building, but they resumed in 1999.
In 2024, the Museum expanded the exhibition into its atrium, featuring findings from seven new archaeological sites in Aigialeia. The exhibition was organized into seven sections, tailored to the special features of the listed building and the space surrounding the atrium (which once housed shops).
The Archaeological Museum of Aigion, with a renovated shell, an enriched exhibition, and accessibility for all visitor groups, is called upon to play an important role in the region’s development.
