Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa
Description
The Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa is a modern regional museum that has been operating since the end of 2009 in a newly-constructed building located at the city’s northern entrance. The collection of the Archaeological Museum’s permanent exhibition titled “Thesproton Chora” (Land of the Thesprotians) covers a wide chronological spectrum, spanning from the Middle Paleolithic Age to late Roman times, while also including a small number of artifacts from the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Periods. Through five independent thematic units and over 1,600 exhibits, the Museum showcases the longstanding history and rich archaeological heritage of Thesprotia, with a primary emphasis on the Hellenistic Era – a period of significant flourishing and particularly representative of the region. The Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa now serves as a vibrant cultural hub in the city, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for the public.
