Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis
Description
The Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis is a thematic museum dedicated exclusively to Nicopolis, the city founded by Octavia in memory of his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. One of the Museum’s primary goals is to maintain a close connection to the archaeological site, which is only 2 km away.
It is the third museum established in Nicopolis, in chronological order, and began operations in 2009. The numerous findings that came to light as research at the archaeological site intensified over the last few decades, combined with the need to create a modern museum to showcase and promote the site, led to the establishment of the new museum.
Centered on the concept encapsulated in the phrase “One Naval Battle – One City – One Empire,” its permanent exhibition presents the history of the Roman and Byzantine Nikopolis, showcasing aspects of its inhabitants’ public and private lives. It is organized into nine thematic sections and includes over 1,000 exhibits.
