Archaeological Museum of Samothrace

Description

The Archaeological Museum of Samothrace, designed by Stuart M. Shaw (1899-1985), was constructed between 1939 and 1961 and renovated between 2014 and 2015. The museum’s first exhibition opened to the public in 1955. The new exhibition occupies Halls A, B, C, D, and E. Hall A showcases architectural restorations. Hall B is dedicated to the ancient city and its necropolises. Halls C and D feature monuments from the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, titled Entry to the Sanctuary and Initiation, respectively. In the arcade of the central yard, between Halls C and D, inscriptions mostly from the Sanctuary of the Great Gods are displayed. Hall E includes findings from the island outside the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, dating from the Middle Neolithic (app. 5,500 BC) to the Modern Times (19th century).
