Archaeological site of Zone, Alexandroupolis
Description
The archaeological site of Zone is situated 20 km west of Alexandroupolis, near the village of Dikella. It is an ancient city built by settlers from Samothraki in the early 6th century BC. The ancient Zone operated as an organized urban centre and was considered a major commercial hub. At the archaeological site, one can see how an ancient Greek city was shaped, with its walls, temples, private residencies, workshops etc. An especially important finding is the temple of God Apollo dating back to the 6th century BC, as it is the only listed archaic temple of Apollo in Thrace. The area has been consistently excavated since 1966 and remains a well-organized, safeguarded, and open-to-visit archaeological site.
