Archaeological site of Ancient Europos, Kilkis
Description
The archaeological site of Europos, a significant ancient city in Macedonian Bottiaea and the birthplace of Seleucus I Nicator, the most prominent of Alexander the Great’s successors, is situated southeast of Mount Paiko, in the fertile basin of the Axios River. This archaeological site includes an excavated section of the cemetery of Europos, whose well-maintained overground structures and courtyards have provided the opportunity to observe social stratification across different time periods. This is evidenced by the variety in the category, size, and construction materials of the burial monuments over a significant period, ranging from classical times to the Early Christianity era (4th century BC to 4th-6th centuries AD). Among the notable discoveries at the archaeological site in the region was the only kouros statue in Macedonia, currently housed in the Archaeological Museum of Kilkis.
