Castle of Patras
Description
The Castle of Patras is situated at the foothills of mount Panachaikon. It was built in the 6th century AD, during the reign of emperor Justinianus. It was constructed using remnants of the ancient Acropolis that once stood on the same site and had already crumbled. The age-old history of the Castle is closely connected to the history of the city. From 1950 to 1975 the Castle was administered by the City of Patras, but was subsequently transferred to the Ministry of Culture, specifically under the 6th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. Today it serves as an archaeological site.
