Ekklesiasterion, Ancient Messene
Description
The Ekklesiasterion (Odeon) in Ancient Messene is situated near the village of Mavromati and is part of the Asclepieion. It dates back to the late 3rd century BC and underwent repairs during Roman times. The Ekklesiasterion is a theatrical structure featuring a semi-circular orchestra, a stage, and a proscenium. It also includes an upper and lower koilon (auditorium), each with three rows of seats. At the proscenium, there were skenothekes (storage rooms for stage props), while at the eastern edge of the orchestra, there is a surviving podium with a statue of a benefactor. The Odeon had an entrance on the street side and was connected to the Asclepieion. It has been restored and is preserved in excellent condition, occasionally hosting cultural events.
