Old Archaeological Museum of Chania

Description

The Old Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the old city of Chania and was housed in the Cathedral of the Venetian Monastery of St Francis. For many years, it was the main venue for displaying archaeological findings from western Crete, covering an extensive historical period from the Neolithic Age to the Roman Era.

Its collections featured artifacts such as vessels, figurines, jewelry, inscriptions, and mosaics, with a particular focus on the Minoan civilization and the evolution of settlements in the area. When the new archaeological museum opened in the Chalepas neighborhood in 2021, the collections were transferred there. However, the old museum remains one of the city’s major historical landmarks, holding considerable cultural and architectural value.
