Description

The performance The Old Girls is based on three folk songs: Liogenniti, Sousa, and Andronike. Three stories of women who refused to live the lives others chose for them, enduring violence and injustice because they did not comply with the societal norms of their time. Three songs that stand imperiously, looking the perpetrator in the eye, without fear or shame. Songs represent memory through time; they are the gadfly that stings us, reminding us we are not alone. Songs are the world of humanity. They are a way found by the realm of empathy to stand by us and comfort us. Songs highlight the true compassion for victims – those not accepted by society. Singing will continue to serve its function as long as society insists on turning a blind eye. Singing holds up a mirror for society to see its true face, in the hope that this way, new wrongs will be prevented from happening.
