Ancient Theatre of Demetrias, Volos

Description

The Ancient Theatre of Demetrias is situated within the walls of the ancient city of Demetrias, at the site of “sta Dontia”, near the neighbourhood of N. Pagasi of the Municipality of Volos. It was built at the same time when the ancient city was founded by Demetrius I Poliorcetes (the Besieger of Cities), by uniting cities in Magnesia between 294-292 BC. In its present-day form, the monument has lost the stone coating on the seats of the cavea, while the construction of the stage dates back to the Roman period. Despite the extensive stone-looting that began when the theatre was abandoned, the monument still preserves the three-part structure of Hellenistic theatres: the stage structure, the orchestra and the cavea (koilon) with the epitheatre.
