Castle of Saint George, Argostoli, Cephalonia
Description
The fortress of Saint George, also known today as the Castle, was the capital of Cephalonia from the Middle Ages to 1757. It was founded in the 12th century AD. From 1500 onwards, the Venetian conquerors of Cephalonia constructed public buildings like a command post, residences for the Provveditore (Overseer) and the Councilors, barracks, prisons, and tanks within the Castle’s 16-acre-area. Thanks to the Castle’s significant strategic position, within a 600-meter radius of its walls, ramparts and watchtowers, one could spot pirate ships from up to 20 miles away on a clear day. The Castle with a panoramic view of the sea has been partially restored and is a top attraction for island visitors.
