(Former) Holy Convent of Ursulines, Tinos

Description

The former Ursuline Convent and School is located in Loutra, a small village in the hinterland of Tinos.
The convent was founded in 1862 by the 37-year-old Englishwoman Maria-Anna Leves, who was of Constantinopolitan origin and had joined the Ursuline Order in 1853. French Ursuline sisters who arrived on Tinos assisted Maria-Anna Leves in establishing the convent, for which she devoted her entire paternal inheritance. In later years, the Ursuline sisters organized and operated an orphanage, a boarding school, a Greek primary school, as well as workshops for carpet weaving, sewing, and other educational and social activities within the convent grounds.Between 1910 and 1938, the Ursuline School experienced its golden age, hosting more than 300 boarding students from aristocratic families throughout Greece, as well as from the coasts of Asia Minor and the Eastern Mediterranean, including Egypt, Cyprus, Smyrna (Izmir), and Constantinople (Istanbul).Today, the school building has been granted to the Municipality of Tinos and houses the public primary school serving the island’s inland communities.
At the same time, the former convent operates as an exhibition space, which is open to visitors daily during the summer months from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Cultural events are also held within the former convent complex.
During the summer, a community café operates in the garden of the complex, with proceeds supporting the charitable work of the Church.
The former Ursuline Convent and School belongs to the Catholic Archdiocese of Naxos, Tinos, Andros and Mykonos.
