Kimolos Castle
Description
The Castle of Kimolos stands within the Chora of Kimolos and is one of the most typical fortified settlements in the Cyclades. It was built sometime between the 14th and 15th centuries, during a period of increased pirate invasions, to provide safety for the inhabitants.
The settlement is designed as a “village-castle,” in which houses are built very close to one another, essentially forming a single defensive complex. The exterior walls of the houses served as the castle walls, creating a closed and protected space.
Today, the Castle largely preserves its authentic form and remains inhabited. It serves as a living example of traditional Cycladic fortification architecture and is a major component of Kimolos’ cultural identity.
