Petralona Cave, Chalkidiki

On the western side of Chalkidiki, at the foothills of Mount Katsika, lies one of Greece’s most significant caves, the second-most-visited ancient monument in Northern Greece. It is distinguished for its unique speleological, anthropological, paleontological, and archaeological wealth. Its stalactite ornamentation is stunning, and its scientific importance is recognized worldwide. Within the cave, one of the most ancient and best-preserved human skulls in Europe was discovered, along with Paleolithic stone tools and a wealth of fossilized fauna.
Currently, the cave serves as an accessible archaeological site and museum, playing a crucial role in the study of the region’s prehistory and in promoting its natural and cultural heritage.
