The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Red Church), Vourgareli, Arta
Description
The Red Church is the only surviving Byzantine museum in Tzoumerka and one of the few landmarks that confirm the area was inhabited and significant during medieval times. It is situated in the town of Paleochori, 3 km south of Vourgareli. Its construction dates back to approximately 1280. The temple is dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, yet it is mostly known as the Red Church, due to the large number of bricks decorating its external walls.
